The EU is the region in the world with the highest climate targets – by 2045 the entire Union should be climate neutral. Yet companies that are now implementing changes in their operations to reduce their climate impact are faced with bureaucratic bottlenecks and a lack of infrastructure. This is where things too often come to a halt. The most obvious problem that slows down companies' willingness to invest is the long permit processes under the Environmental Code. For example, it can take up to five years for a recycling operation to obtain extended permits to accept additional material that would otherwise be put in landfills. That is far too long. If companies are to succeed, the state must also do its part in the climate agreement that politicians have drawn up.
