Some time ago, Hummeltorp CEO Christer Otterström participated as a speaker at SBMI's industry day, an important meeting place for the Swedish rock materials industry. During his presentation, Christer emphasized how crucial it is to have a sustainable and circular material supply and efficient construction waste management, not only for the climate, but also for a more resource-efficient and robust community construction.

Today is Recycling Day, a day when we pay attention to the great environmental benefits of recycling a little extra. Despite Sweden often being ranked as one of the world's greenest economies, we are missing out on great opportunities to recycle surplus materials from construction.

Last Friday, Hummeltorp's CEO, Christer Otterström, participated in an important panel debate during the Swedish Recycling Industries' launch of the 2024 roadmap for fossil-free competitiveness.

On June 26th, international organizations, universities, researchers and companies will gather in Stockholm to create a global green innovation collaboration - a collaboration that will result in a "Sustainable Valley" where climate-smart innovation is at the center.

According to Statistics Norway's latest figures, construction is at its lowest level in ten years. At the same time, Sweden needs huge investments in infrastructure. The state must step up to maintain and upgrade Sweden's infrastructure. But it is not enough to build new. The EU is the region in the world with the highest climate target – by 2045 the entire Union must be climate neutral. Nevertheless, companies that are now implementing changes in their operations to reduce their climate impact are faced with bureaucratic bottlenecks and a lack of infrastructure. On that theme, Hummeltorp and the CEO of Företagarna write a joint debate article.

The effects of climate change are clearer than ever when the countries of the world now meet at the climate conference COP28. When the world's leaders gather to discuss climate challenges, it is important that companies reflect on what changes need to take place in business life. Recently, the IVL Swedish Environmental Institute released a report that shows that increased recycling of excavated materials from construction processes has major environmental benefits.

Sweden's total climate impact, from construction processes alone, amounts to ten million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. It is as much as all passenger cars in Sweden emit in a year, and it is more than what all trucks and buses together emit in a year. Extracted virgin non-renewable ballast materials, just in Sweden, each year corresponds to more than the weight of the Globe 2200 times over. At least half of this amount could instead be replaced with recycled ballast from excavation waste.

Now that Almedalen Week has ended and our thoughts have had time to settle, we at Hummeltorp would like to extend a big thank you to everyone involved for valuable meetings. Many share our belief that the transition to a circular society, where building materials and natural resources are recycled instead of discarded, is absolutely necessary.

Extracted non-renewable aggregate materials, in Sweden alone, annually correspond to the weight of the Globe more than 2,000 times over. At least half of this amount could instead be replaced with recycled material from excavation waste. Imagine recycling materials instead of extracting nature from new non-renewable resources, what an enormously positive impact it would generate. This is where Hummeltorp makes a difference, among other things!

We at Hummeltorp are very happy to have advanced to the finals of the SEB Next Awards - a competition that celebrates sustainable entrepreneurship and the companies that drive it forward.

Staff Day is a day for the team behind Hummeltorp's operations to get to know each other outside of their professional roles and reflect on what Hummeltorp stands for. The staff day took place at the end of May and was marked by sharp insights as well as a lot of laughter.

On November 30, the Recycling Gala 2023 will be held in Stockholm and Hummeltorp's CEO is a finalist in the category "Recycling Inspirer of the Year". The award goes to a person who drives, engages and inspires others when it comes to increasing recycling and reuse, in other words to someone who makes a difference.
