Researchers, companies and the business community come together to build an international sustainability cluster in Stockholm – to create a Sustainable Valley
On June 26th, international organizations, universities, researchers and companies will gather in Stockholm to create a global green innovation collaboration – a collaboration that will result in a “Sustainable Valley” where climate-smart innovation is at the center. “We don’t have time to wait, the solutions are needed now,” says Christer Otterström, initiator and CEO of the recycling company Hummeltorp.
Drastic changes are needed to meet climate goals. The UN's climate panel has reported that global emissions would need to be reduced by 43% by 2030 to achieve carbon dioxide targets by 2050. At the same time, Sweden is on track to significantly increase greenhouse gas emissions. New solutions are needed.
With innovation at the center of the green transition, researchers, organizations and businesses are coming together under the name “The Green Innovation Collaborative” to discuss green research and research areas that are particularly under-treated. The initiative includes recycling company Hummeltorp, Biosphere 2 at the University of Arizona, the Institute for Sustainable Development and the Global eSustainability Initiative (GeSI).
Just over a week ago, the government brought together parts of the business community to discuss climate policy at a national climate meeting.
– When the country's leadership and public sector fail to invite researchers, academics and leading organizations to climate meetings, it falls to other actors to join forces to make a difference. We don't have time to wait, solutions are needed now, says Christer Otterström, initiator of Sustainable Valley and CEO of Hummeltorp.
The Green Innovation Collaborative will meet on June 26 at the World Trade Center in Stockholm. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to create a city – Sustainable Valley – in the Stockholm region that will be the hub for green research and a driver for sustainable development. The initiators of Sustainable Valley are the Swedish recycling company Hummeltorp and the Institute for Sustainable Development in the USA.
– An international hub for climate-smart work is needed where innovation is at the center. The hope is that Sustainable Valley will become the hub for research work and an engine for development that supports the transition to a circular and carbon-neutral society, concludes Christer Otterström.
About the initiative
The Green Innovation Collaborative is a public-private network that focuses on habitat research for housing, construction, plastics, chemicals, agriculture, energy, digitalization, shipping, aviation, technology and a range of other industries.
About Hummeltorp
Hummeltorp is part of the growing circular economy, where surplus materials and natural resources are recycled instead of being discarded and creating large waste landfills. Hummeltorp takes untreated excavation materials, cleans and refines them in several steps before recycling them into construction, gravel, soil and specialty products that often possess better properties and qualities than the original material.
