Pumice is used in horticulture to improve soil drainage and reduce the risk of root rot. Its porous structure helps to store and gradually release water, which benefits plant growth.
When pumice is mixed into the soil, it increases the oxygen supply to the roots, which promotes stronger and healthier root development. Pumice is used in the construction of green roofs, where it has the great advantage of its low volume weight.

Content description
The product is a light and porous volcanic rock whose basic properties are that it can hold a lot of water and at the same time retain oxygen due to the high proportion of open pores. Both the water and oxygen in the pumice stone are available to the plants and therefore it is a very good base for growing media.
Hekla® Pumice from Iceland is considered circular as it is handled carefully, does not break down and can be easily recycled.
Use
Hekla® Pumice 2-8 is a medium fraction that contributes to good structure in various types of planting soils.
Pumice is often used to improve drainage in heavy or clayey soil. It prevents soil compaction and helps keep roots oxygenated. It is perfect for improving soil structure in flower beds and borders, especially for plants that require well-drained soil.
Pumice can also be used as a decorative covering material in gardens, around shrubs or trees to create a natural and stylish surface.
For soil improvement: Mix pumice with your soil to improve its structure and drainage. Use a ratio of about 1:4 pumice to soil depending on the need for improved drainage.
Advice & Tips
You mix pumice into your soil to get a coarser, more airy structure but sometimes also to get a lower weight on the soil.
Pumice is porous and creates both a rough, airy structure with its grains, but there is also an internal structure that either holds moisture or air to the roots.
Pumice is great to grow in as is, but it requires that plant nutrients be added with the irrigation water.
